Three Common Causes of Heating System Problems

Today’s residential and commercial HVAC systems are highly sophisticated systems that deliver years of reliable service.  Like all such systems, however, problems can arise from time to time.  If neglected, common heating system problems can potentially threaten not just your comfort, but also your safety.  According to a recent article by the National Fire Protection Association, heating equipment was responsible for 56,000 residential fires in the U.S. between 2009 and 2013.

Although heating system problems can be caused by a wide range of issues, the three most common causes of problems include:

  • Obstructed filtration
  • Mechanical failure
  • Thermostat failures

Thermostat Problems

Let’s start with the last one first.  Malfunctioning and improperly set thermostats are among the most common cause of heating problems.  The thermostat controls how much heat is generated by your heating unit, and when it is generated.  Today’s thermostats are reliable and typically provide years of trouble-free service, but like all electro-mechanical devices, they can develop problems and eventually need to be repaired or replaced.

When this happens, it’s best to replace the nonfunctioning device with a programmable thermostat.  Programmable thermostats allow you to select different temperatures for different times of the day and night, and different days of the week.  This makes them far more energy-efficient than non-programmable models, which can result in significant reductions in your monthly heating and cooling bills.

Problems can also arise if the thermostat was improperly programmed, or inadvertently re-programmed at some point.  Before calling a heating repair company, make sure your thermostat is properly set.  Consult your user’s manual if you have questions about how to do this.

Filtration Problems

Poor filtration is another common cause of heating system problems.  Most manufacturers recommend that you clean or replace your filter at regular intervals.  And in some cases, not doing so can actually void the manufacturer’s warranty.

The heating unit’s filter system keeps harmful dirt, pet dander and other organic particles from becoming trapped in the ductwork, or being recycled throughout your home or workplace.

If not cleaned or replaced on a regular basis, the filter can become clogged, which restricts airflow and forces your heating unit to work harder to maintain your home or workplace at a comfortable temperature.  In the short run, this can lead to higher utility bills and, over time can shorten the lifespan of your heating unit.

Mechanical Problems

Mechanical failure is the most common cause of heating system problems, and encompasses an array of parts and components.  Just like the family car, your heating system is made up of a variety of mechanical components which wear out over time, and as is the case with other mechanical systems – if one component fails, it can cause others to stop working properly as well.

Having your commercial HVAC system properly maintained by Denver heating contractors will ensure that your unit components don’t fail prematurely.  According to Metro Energy Savers, a heating and A/C repair company located in the DFW area, seasonal inspections of your heating and cooling system can also identify small problems before they become bigger and more expensive ones.

Unless you have the necessary experience, knowledge and equipment needed to diagnose and repair these common heating system problems yourself, it’s best to call a reputable HVAC company instead of tackling the job yourself.  Doing so can save you time, money and a lot of frustration.
